Please refer to the DO letter dated Bth September, 2014 (copy enclosed) from Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India addressed to all Chief Secretaries regarding development of traditional handlooms/handicrafts villages as tourist destination for linking traditional textile industry with tourism. It was also envisaged that this activity could be converged with Adarsh Gram (model villages) started by Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India.

A detailed strategy for linking of tourism with handloom sector has been worked out by the Ministry of Textiles jointly with Ministry of Tourism. A detailed letter has been issued by these two ministries jointly to all State Chief Secretaries. A copy of the letter dated 7th January 2015 is enclosed.

You would agree that this initiative would be a win-win situation for promotion of tourism Industry as well as handloom sector and it can be easily implemented through convergence of funds available in different schemes of Ministry of Textiles, Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Rural Development, in addition to various state level initiatives. It is, therefore, requested that you may please identity atleast one village in your State which has strong presence of traditional handloom weaving and is located near or in close vicinity of a popular tourist circuit.

A project report may be prepared for such an identified village in line  with strategy detailed in the letter dated 7th January 2015, and the same may be forwarded to us for sanction of the project.
