Towards ODF panchayat: A participative approach (Kaindinagar, Chatra, Jharkhand)

Keeping in cognizance, the importance of hygiene & sanitation, the Kaindinagar panchayat will be made Open Defecation Free. As experiences elsewhere have shown, mere propping up of physical infrastructure in form of toilets isn’t enough to make a village open defecation free. Sensitization campaigns focusing on behavorial change is also an imperative for ODF mission to succeed.

In this regard, awareness drives shall be conducted. To ensure that toilets are well-built, and to the satisfaction of the villagers, 12 masons from the Kaindinagar panchayat itself were given a 3 day training on toilet construction. The training which comprised of 1 day of classroom training and 2 days of practical of constructing toilets aimed to give the trained mason a hands on experience of constructing toilets. Involvement of locals themselves makes the campaign to make the adrash gram ODF a participatory exercise.

Jal Sahiyas in the panchayat were also trained on Swachh Bharat Mission. A total of 952 toilets are to be constructed in the Kaindinagar panchayat.
