A simple, low-cost technology for treating human waste – developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) – can aid in putting an end to open defecation and manual scavenging in the country.
The bio-digester technology of DRDO has the potential to give a thrust to the ambitious Clean India campaign, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The technology, which uses bacteria to treat waste, was originally developed by the Defence Research Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior, to meet the sanitation requirements of soldiers serving in the high altitudes of Ladakh and Siachen.
The system is built to operate from minus 20 degrees to plus 50 degrees and is highly customisable as per the requirements and local conditions. The best feature is that it totally does away with manual scavenging and is low on maintenance and installation cost.
The major drawback for the DRDO technology not becoming popular is lack of a marketing arm and major players in the sanitation business who can push the product nationwide. Being a green technology, it holds potential for providing sustainable and safe disposal of human waste, DRDO officials said. The original News from The Hindi can be read here!
Here the the details from the website:
Biodigester technology has been developed for resolving the problems of un-decomposed human waste. The innovation degrades and converts the human waste into usable water and gasses in an eco-friendly manner. The generated gas can be utilized for energy/ cooking and water for irrigation purposes.
The process involves the bacteria which feed upon the faecal matter inside the tank, through anaerobic process which finally degrades the matter and releases methane gas that can be used for cooking, along with the treated water.
The Bio-digester tank can be manufactured and customised as per the requirement.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has volunteered to provide bio-toilets at Turuputalla and Pedamainavanilanka in Narsapur mandal of West Godavari district in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) following a request from Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitaraman. A delegation from the DRDO and FICCI headed by S. Radhakrsihnan, Director, Directorate of Industry interface and Technology Management of the DRDO undertook a field study in the two villages for two days. The FICCI is fabricating bio-toilets and bio-digester tanks.
According to an official website of the DRDO-FICCI, the bio-digester technology involving a bio-toilet and bio-digester tank helps in degrading and converting the human waste into usable water and gases in an eco-friendly manner which can be used for cooking along with the treated water. The bio-digester tank is a cylindrical structure with a provision for an inlet for human waste and outlet for bio-gas.
